"There is no one on earth more deserving of help than a good dog who has given its heart and soul to its family and then lost its home." — Annie Simon

Special Dogs in Permanent Foster Care

Paris Lola Ruby Ziggy Minzy
China Lynn

The CCRT believes every dog deserves our support, care and attention.

Volunteers with the CCRT love nothing more than to bring a dog to his or her new 'forever home' and know that we have made a difference in both the dog and their new families life. Those happy endings keep us motivated to continue our animal rescue efforts in the hopes that a time will come when groups such as our are no longer needed.

Occasionally, dogs come into our care and we know that we will never be able to place them into permanent homes. They are often dumped in shelters, SPCA's or turned over to the CCRT as their owners are unable or unwilling to take care of them. These dogs are very ill and/or old, have special needs or require extensive and expensive surgery. We know that they will require the commitment of the CCRT for a very long time and we sometimes make the decision to keep them in our care for the rest of their lives.

These special dogs are placed in permanent foster care with a loving CCRT volunteer and their family. The CCRT pays for all medical treatment including vet visits, medicine and any necessary surgery the dog will need for the rest of it's life. The foster home also takes on the added burden of knowing this dog will be with them until it is their time to go to the "Rainbow Bridge."

Needless to say, the medical costs associated with these dogs are usually very high as many of them require ongoing care and medication for several years. These dogs put a serious financial strain on the CCRT and we need your help to allow us to keep tending to these very special pets. A donation to the CCRT gives us the flexibility to continue caring for all dogs that come into our rescue group - the young, old, healthy or ailing.

Paris is an example of dog that is in permanent foster care (see her story below). Even though many people would have originally given up on her, the CCRT believes in doing everything possible to keep our rescues happy, healthy and safe - all while maintaining a high quality of life. The CCRT has accomplished that with Paris, as we have with dogs before her and dogs to come.

The CCRT will continue to rescue dogs like Paris and are committed to doing everything we can to alleviate their pain and give them a quiet and loving home that they may live out the rest of their years. Please consider a donation to the "Every Penny* Counts" fund and help make a special dog's life healthier and more comfortable.

* Penny was a CCRT rescue that came to the CCRT in 2004. She wasn't expected to live very long but, thanks to her foster mom and supporters, the CCRT was able to help Penny live a happy and healthy life in permanent foster care, until she passed away in late 2005.

Because we believe that every Penny counts...

Ziggy

Location: Toronto, ON
Age: 10 years
Gender: male, neutered
Weight: 10 lbs

Ziggy was brought to a shelter as a stray.

Due to ongoing health issues, Ziggy is now a permanent member of the CCRT Family. Here he will receive the the  extra-special care and gentle handling that he needs.

Ziggy’s front and hind legs shake often but this does not hinder him from walking, running and jumping. He has some sensitivity to being touched on his left rear quarter and occasionally on his tummy. He is a gentle dog that requires a gentle touch. No rough-housing!  He occasionally displays a “Slow Placing Reflex”* in his left rear leg. No power walking required to keep this boy happy!

He gets along with the other dogs in his foster home. He loves the spotlight. This sweet affectionate little man is a lovely companion.

CCRT wants to treat and care for Ziggy so that the remainder of his life is as healthy and happy as possible. Your financial support for him will allow us to provide him with the continuing care that he deserves. You can help care for Ziggy by becoming a Sponsorship Angel.

* The Placing Reflex is the dogs ability to immediately right its paw position when it is manually turned under, with the dog in standing (weight bearing position) (Also known as conscious proprioception)

Lola

LolaLola was surrendered to CCRT in March 2008 .

She is 6 years old and weighs a mere 5 pounds. When she was surrendered, she was having multiple petit mal seizures every day and the vet suspected she may have a liver problem. We had the vet take an ammonia blood level (which came back high) as well as a liver biopsy. The biopsy showed that her liver is atrophied (ie very crumbly) and her internal organs are not in good shape. The biopsy can't be more specific, it just shows that Lola has a big problem. As antibiotics and most medications metabolise in the liver, this creates even more of an issue, but the vet has prescribed a few things to help her.

Lola, at this time is eating her special " LD" food well, drinking lots of water and is very happy go lucky. Lola's foster family says that she is a well behaved girl who always wants to be cuddled and stroked - which they are happy to do. She continues to thrive and is a sweet happy little girl who is safely ensconced in a loving foster home

Lola is not expected to live very long, we have no idea how long she will live. At this time, she is enjoying a good quality of life, playing with her foster family and foster siblings and even chasing squirrels that come into "her" backyard. Because her liver isn't functioning, her system and internal organs are being poisoned by toxins. Fortunately, Lola is not in any pain.

CCRT wants to treat and care for her as best we can to make her remaining time as healthy and happy as possible. Your financial support for this special girl will allow us to provide her the care she so deserves. Please become a Sponsorship Angel for Lola, our very special angel girl.

Please note that no adoption applications will be accepted for Lola.

Minzy

This loving beautiful girl is Minzy. She was surrendered to CCRT from a shelter because she was extremely stressed within the shelter environment. She is spayed, up-to-date with shots, micro-chipped, vet-checked and weights between six and seven pounds.

She is very frightened and startles easily. Currently, she watches but does not participate with people or other fur friends, although she is beginning to venture out from her safe place, which is  her favourite basket. She loves to snuggle in bed under the covers. Minzy is  an extremely emotionally fragile little girl .She is safely ensconced in her foster home and will remain there on a permanent basis. No more moves for Minzy!

Applications are not being accepted for Minzy.

Please consider purchasing a sweater and/or blanket for Minzy, or becoming her Sponsorship Angel by making a cash donation towards her care.

China Lynn

Location: London, Ontario
Age: 8 years
Gender: female, spayed
Weight: 11 lb. — needs to lose weight
Adoption Fee : $200.00

China -Lynn came to CCRT after being surrendered with 3 other dogs after her elderly owner was no longer able to look after them. She's approximately 8 years old (possibly younger according to the vet), up to date with her shots, spayed and has had a dental. And, most importantly--she's completely loveable!! She smiles at you!! When she wags her tail, her whole bum wriggles. She needs to lose some wieght and is getting used to a feeding schedule and dog food at her foster home. It appears that she was given a lot of treats and food from the table. She loves to please; is pee pad trained and will ask to go outside although does not give very definitive signals as yet; but she's trying!

December 2010 update:

This is a bittersweet update for ourselves & China-Lynn.

China-Lynn has become a permenant foster of CCRT. She is losing her sight and the opthamologist has recommended she stay where she is and not be placed for adoption

She is a sweet, lovable little gal who has the nicest little smile and a very welcome tail wag and wriggle whenever we come into the room.

I say bittersweet; we're sad for her and at the same time feel priviledged to be able to continue to share our lives with her. We will take great care to help her work thru this huge adjustment in her life and help her to maintain her sweet and balanced personality and ensure she continues to enjoy life to it's fullest.

Thanks CCRT for providing ongoing care to Little Miss China-Lynn for the rest of her life!!

Ruby

Location: Ottawa
Age: 8 years
Gender: female, spayed
Weight: 12 lb.

Ruby’s foster family tells us she is a sweetheart. She is very easy to care for, doesn’t bother with the other dogs in the foster home, never has an accident in the house, listens to everything you tell her to do and is a big fan of car rides. She obviously was well loved and trained at some point as she knows basic commands and walks very well on a leash. Ruby is just like a rag doll, cuddling up like a newborn baby on her back for tummy rubs. She is an older dog, not very active and does show signs of arthritis, which makes her move more slowly than other dogs.

Ruby’s favourite place to hang out is a pile of blankets in the front hall closet.
